Geek Camps with Weymouth School and Good Seed Trust

Kids usually want to spend their holidays playing, not learning. Accelerating Auckland’s Geek Camp changed all that!

Over the week commencing 19 January 2015 some really excited South Auckland kids learnt about some of the latest in cool technologies including stop motion animation, music production and game making. They even had a play with augmented reality – a technology so cutting edge that many adults will not have heard of it. This technology however is set to revolutionise future marketing campaigns.

The 2 x 2 day Geek Camps hosted nearly 60 early teens from Weymouth School and Good Seed Trust’s afterschool programme in Mangere.

Mentors that lead workshops in the programme are established industry professionals from AwhiWorld, Auckland Libraries and the High Tech Youth Network, with student support from AUT University.

Delivery was further supported by Samsung who provided the devices used in the workshops, Auckland Council, Accelerating Aotearoa Incorporated, Waikato University, Coconut Wireless and the Southern Initiative.

The Geek Camps were held at the Manukau Civic Building and this wonderful opportunity enabled these young South Aucklanders to get up close with the latest apps and devices and learn about the exciting careers offered by the growing tech sector.

As well us the items to the right some more content from the camps can be found at specific webpages designated to Weymouth School and Good Seed Trust.
